CNN —Drake recently dropped his eighth studio album, and it apparently comes with a bit of controversy. English band the Pet Shop Boys called the Canadian singer out on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday – the day Drake released his “For All the Dogs” album. “Surprising to hear @Drake singing the chorus of ‘West End girls’ in the track ‘All the Parties’ on his new album,” the band’s tweet read. “No credit given or permission requested.”Toward the end of the “Parties” track, Drake does indeed sing the chorus of “West End Girls,” the Pet Shop Boys’ hit song off their 1986 album “Please.”CNN has reached out to representatives of Drake for comment. The Pet Shop Boys perform on the Other Stage at the Glastonbury festival near the village of Pilton in Somerset, southwest England, on June 26, 2022.

“The Missing Thread, Untold Stories of Black Fashion” is filled with photos like this, as the showcase dives deep into the history of Black British culture from the 1970s to the present day — specifically, how it has been a forgotten influence on the fashion industry. British Jamaican photographer Vanley Burke has spent over 50 years documenting Black British communities in Birmingham. London-born photographer Jennie Baptiste is another artist getting her dues in "The Missing Thread." At the center of the exhibition is the work of Black British designer Joe Casely-Hayford, who died in 2019. Casely-Hayford was nominated for Womenswear British Designer of the Year in 1989 and also Innovative Designer of the Year in 1991.

LONDON (AP) — A new exhibition is opening in London to chart for the first time the contributions that Black British culture made to U.K. fashion and design history and to celebrate Black designers who haven't received public recognition. “The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion" at central London's Somerset House, which opens Thursday, pays tribute to the influence of Black designers in fashion from the 1970s. Curators said that the idea of a display celebrating Black fashion and culture has germinated for some time. But Oldfield — who had a Jamaican father — is rarely referenced as a Black designer, and has never championed Black culture. And that was largely a problem for Black designers at the time,” Ibi said.

The one unanimous conclusion they came to was that Beijing wants a greater state presence in these sectors. Kroeber says the crackdowns are about "defining what the state does, what the private sector does, and creating a more limited sandbox for the private sector to play in." That has left investors now picking the state over the private sector. The CCP's July Politburo meeting reinforced the message, with the top policymaking body pledging to put a floor under the property sector, help indebted local governments heal and boost consumer demand. Huang Yan, general manager of private fund manager Shanghai QiuYang Capital Co, said Beijing will crack down on any sector seen as increasing people's economic burden.

Britain upgrades to also-ran in EV battery race

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is joining the global arms race to secure future industries, but he has a long way to go. Europe may have 25 so-called gigafactories, vast plants that turn raw materials such as lithium into battery packs, by 2025. While both Theresa May and Boris Johnson tried, they failed to win over big global players like Tesla (TSLA.O), Samsung or Northvolt, which preferred European sites. The UK leader can at least now claim he can attract global players. But Tata’s 40 GWh of new capacity brings Britain’s total to just over 50 GWh by 2026, after factoring in the plant operated by China’s Envision in Sunderland.

The new plant is expected to be built in Somerset, south-west England, while Jaguar Land Rover's UK factories are based near Birmingham, central England. With an initial output of 40 gigawatt hours, Britain said the factory would provide almost half of the battery production needed by 2030. The Faraday Institution has projected UK battery demand to reach over 100 GWh a year by that time. "With this strategic investment, the Tata Group further strengthens its commitment to the UK," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said in the statement. "Almost every car producing nation in the world (is) offering a lot of incentives in order to ensure that they preserve the integrity of their car industry," he said.

LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - Britain is set to secure a commitment from Tata's Jaguar Land Rover to build a battery plant in southwest England to supply a new range of electric Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. India's Tata has chosen a site in Somerset, the Bloomberg report said, citing people familiar with the plans. The company is set to outline its decision as soon as this week, the report added. The cost of certain goods is retreating in some places, but that doesn't include live music. Concert tickets have surged in price, to the point where economists are noticing. While ticket prices have increased, he said, mid-year figures haven't shown an appreciable rise since May 2022, when U.S. inflation was 8.6%. In India, fans are happy to pay a premium for quality entertainment, according to Owen Roncon, chief of business for Live Entertainment at BookMyShow. In Britain, about 150,000 music fans paid 340 pounds ($431)for a ticket to June's Glastonbury festival to see Elton John and hundreds of other acts.

CNN —A team of researchers excavating mass burial sites in England have detected the DNA of the bacteria that caused the plague in human skeletal remains — and they are the oldest known cases of the disease in Great Britain. The bacterial DNA is thousands of years more ancient than the oldest strain uncovered prior to this latest finding. When it comes to the disease, there is a lot that scientists still don’t know — including how it spread, Swali said. And science may never truly know the severity of the plague 4,000 years ago when it came to humans, Roberts said. And while there are historical records of plague outbreaks, ancient DNA could potentially give us a look even further back, Swali said.

When her family bought the property in 1921, it cost about $250. According to the Bank of England's inflation calculator, 200 pounds in 1921 would be worth about 7,800 pounds (or $9,600) today. "That house must hold so many lovely memories for Mrs. Gifford and her family, but now, after more than a century, it's time for another family to make some memories."
